Congress kick off

A splashy welcome reception featuring traditional Japanese culture officially kicked off the 51st IFAJ international congress last night. It was a milestone evening for IFAJ – the first ever congress in Asia, with a sold-out crowd of 240 agricultural journalists from 40 different countries.

Words of weclome from IFAJ President David Markey of Ireland and the head of the Japan Agricultural Journalists Association, Hiroki Ose started the evening, and the congress was declared open with a ceremonial tapping of a sake barrel.

But the highlight was the unveiling of a massive 238 kg tuna fish freshly caught that morning. After plenty of oohing and aahing from the assembled audience, we watched as expert fish cutters ceremonially dismembered the giant fish and turned it into tasty sashimi right in front of us.
