What makes a good story?

ECFWA 2008 WINTER SEMINAR: What makes a good story?

How does the media define a good story? What separates the great story or pitch from the mediocre? How are we to define a good agricultural story? Join Eastern Canada Farm Writers Association (ECFWA) and our expert panel of journalists to hear their perspective on just what it is that makes a good story.

Moderator: Ivor Shapiro, associate professor with the Ryerson School of Journalism, investigative journalist and a former editor of Chatelaine. Ivor is currently working on a book about feature writing and is editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journalism Project, a collaborative national project exploring issues related to the achievement of excellence in journalism.

Panelists:

  • Jim Algie, reporter at Owen Sound Sun Times – has won numerous provincial and national awards for writing, particularly on the subjects of agriculture and the environment.
  • Kim Pittaway, freelance editorial consultant and writer – former editor-in-chief of Chatelaine, Kim has been involved in several Foodland Ontario seasonal food campaigns, and is this year’s chair of the National Magazine awards.
