But there are many other sectors - beef, pork, horticulture, sheep, veal for example - that do not enjoy the same protection. In some situations, they have grown on the basis of export markets (especially pork and beef) so implementing a supply managed system based largely on domestic consumption would mean a significant cut in production. The question of supply management is one that divides Canadian agriculture. You'll have the chance to learn more about it if you come to the IFAJ congress in Canada in 2011 (couldn't resist a quick promo of our event next year!).Looking forward to seeing you in Belgium - and thanks for reading.

You’re right, when it comes to dairy and poultry, Canadian farmers are in an often envied situation with the supply management system that gives them a stable income. Dairy farmers in Holland are jealous at Canada's payment system based on cost price. This must mean a fair income for dairy farmers and therefor a secure/sustainable future for these farming families. Doesn't this set an example for other agricultural sectors? Or is there a back side to it as well.

Very recognizable Lilian. But what about your dairy industry?
