Grow your own pasta – virtually
When I came across a website that mentioned it would let me grow my own wheat online and follow it through right to my dinner plate, I have to admit I was intrigued.
I went to www.howwheatworks.com and signed myself up so I could get started. Faced with several different wheat types I could plant, I chose durum as I am totally addicted to pasta – and the majority of our pasta contains this particular kind of wheat.
Site sponsor Wheat Foods Council touts the online game as a “virtual farm-to-fork experience built for people of all ages. You will have the opportunity to grow and harvest your own wheat field, mill the golden grain and create your wheat food of choice. This exciting, interactive program is filled with factual information, vibrant video and 3-D animation and fun, educational activities.”
So far, I’ve planted my wheat and watched it grow. The site said it would email me once it was ready for harvest – so far I’m still waiting, although to be fair, it’s only been a day!
This reminds me somewhat of the farming games on Facebook that many people play, except this is limited to a single crop and you can’t interact with other “farmers” online. But you do learn a lot about how wheat is grown, processed and ultimately ends up on our plates, which, for the Wheat Foods Council, is what it’s all about.
