The spaghetti tree hoax
In honour of April Fool’s day…a joke involving a spaghetti tree is listed among the top 100 hoaxes of all time.
In 1957, the BBC broadcast a story about a bumper spaghetti harvest from spaghetti trees in Switzerland.
Many UK listeners called in with questions, including how they could grow their own spaghetti trees.
It should be noted that this story was done at a time when pasta was not yet a popular food in the UK, and many Britons had no idea that spaghetti was in fact made from wheat flour and not grown on trees.
Just goes to show that there’s always opportunity to teach people about where food comes from.
Happy April Fool’s!
